Grow Your Own!

It’s no surprise that over a quarter (26%) of the British population already grow their own fruit, veg and herbs – most will be saving at least £200 per year on their grocery bill. And although a full-sized allotment can yield around a ton of veggies each year, the UK’s leading organic growing charity believe that a plot as small as 1.2m x 1.2m can supply year round fruit and veg for as little as £50.

But, it’s not all about money! A recent survey revealed that a staggering 95% of growers are simply in it for the fun-factor, and a further 81% grow their own just because it tastes so much better than shop-bought equivalents. The environment benefits too – ‘food miles’ are cut down to almost nothing and you’ll be providing a habitat for native wildlife like bees, hedgehogs and garden birds.

So for the freshest possible food all year round why not grow your own fruit and veg at home? Spring is a great time to sow a whole range of seeds – carrots, summer cauliflowers, beetroot, beans and lettuce can all be started off outside. Quick-growing summer veg like salad leaves, spring onions and radishes can be sown every few weeks throughout the warmer weather to give you regular, tasty harvests. To get a head start with next year’s crops plant garlic and sow broad beans and peas in autumn, then leave them in the soil over winter. Although there might not seem to be much to do on your plot during cold spells, winter will be the best time to plant bare-rooted fruit trees and canes as long as the ground isn’t frozen or waterlogged.
